Lesson Plans

Welcome Music

Play this song while families are arriving to create a calm, welcoming atmosphere:

Round 1: Water Acclimation and Fun

Start the lesson with these activities to help children feel comfortable in the water:

  1. Sit the child on the side of the pool. Let them splash their feet or play with toys.
  2. Use floating smiley faces to encourage reaching and splashing.
  3. Use buckets to pour water over the child's body. Sing "Itsy Bitsy Spider" while pouring.
  4. Sing "Ring Around the Rosey" and at the end say "…all jump in!" then gently help the child jump in.

Here are two sketches showing the jump-in activity:

Group Song: The Wheels on the Bus

Gather everyone in the middle of the pool. Play the video and sing along. Hold the swimmer in the "saddle" position as shown in the image below.

The Wheels on the Bus go…

Splash splash splash.

The Wipers on the bus go, swish, swish, swish.

The People on the bus go, Up and down, up and down, up and down.

Here is the video to play:

Round 2: Supported Front and Back Floats

Review supported front and back floats with the parents. Show the pictures below and explain the progression.

Remind parents to support the child securely but gently, allowing the child to feel the water's support. Practice both front and back floats, keeping sessions short and positive.

Supported Back Float / Glide

Have the swimmer rest on the parent's shoulder. Lean into their neck and arm.

If ADVANCED hold the back of the head.

Advanced Babies

Start with head on shoulder, support the head and body, and finally support the head.

Your calm will dictate the swimmer's calm.

ROUND 2 continued:

  1. Start seated at the wall. Throw a toy.
  2. Sing "Ring around the Rosey" on "… all jump in!" enter the water with a jump.
  3. Do supported front float encouraging face in water to toy.
  4. Get the toy with reaching arms.
  5. Back float back to the wall, holding toy.
  6. Repeat.
