Rotate from the Hips, Not the Shoulders
A common mistake when teaching Head Lead Balance with Rotation is that beginner swimmers will try to make it easier by just thrusting their shoulders out of the water. Remember, our goal is to rotate from the spinal axis. Simply flopping the shoulders will not reinforce or work on true spinal rotation.<strong>Coach's Insight:</strong> To correct this, cue the swimmer to imagine their pelvis rotating first. The shoulders should follow naturally, like a pendulum swinging from the core, rather than initiating the movement themselves.
To Breathe, Rotate the Head with Hip Rotation
When breathing, the head rotation must be synchronized with the hip rotation. As the hips move up and rotate, the head should follow, keeping the spine in a straight line. A steady kick is absolutely necessary to maintain this alignment while breathing.If the swimmer lifts their chin, or takes a breath in any way that disrupts spinal alignment, the body will immediately wiggle or weave like a snake in the water. Maintaining a neutral head position relative to the spine is paramount for efficiency.
Understanding the Drill's Focus
It is important to understand that this exercise is more of a <strong>rotation and kicking drill</strong> than it is a speed or pure breathing drill. The over-exaggerated rotation learned here will translate directly into a better connection to the roughly 45° angle you should maintain while swimming.The rotational strength developed here will work exceptionally well for single-arm drills, forcing the swimmer to rely on their core stability and hip power rather than just arm strength.
