BR Kick Drill – Breathe, Kick, Glide

Drill

Name

BR Kick Drill – Breathe, Kick, Glide

Core Skill

Breaststroke kick timing and glide

Who

Swimmers learning or refining the breaststroke kick. Works well for beginner to intermediate levels.

What

Using a kickboard, have your swimmers do 25s or short distances (from the wall to halfway). Start in position 11, holding the bottom of the board.

How

Swimmers perform the drill in a repeating sequence:

Repeat for the desired distance.

Difficulties Instructors Might Face

Swimmers may rush the glide or lift their head too early, breaking the streamline. Emphasize a long, relaxed glide after each kick. Also watch for improper kick form—heels should draw toward the hips before sweeping outward and together.

I got this drill from the ASCA Level 2 class where they talk about “Up, kick, glide” but I like substituting “breathe” instead.
