Backstroke Kick Drill: Titanic – Improve Your Swimmers' Technique

Drill

Overview

From the Olympics Channel, Olympic medalist Elizabeth Beisel explains an awesome drill called "Titanic." She came to our pool to work with our Age Group and Senior swimmers, and it was awesome. She taught this drill to our swimmers, and it is still in the toolbox of approved drills for Age Group.

Who Is This Drill For?

This is an excellent drill for swimmers who are focusing on racing, training, and mastering their strokes. It is best suited for:

  1. Age Group swimmers (typically 9–12 years old)
  2. Senior swimmers (13 and older)
  3. Any competitive swimmer working on backstroke technique

Who Should Avoid This Drill?

I would avoid this drill for all Developmental groups or entry-level competitive groups. The drill requires a strong kick and body awareness that younger or less experienced swimmers may not yet have.

Tips for Younger Swimmers

If you feel the value of the drill outweighs the struggle and difficulty for your youngest swimmers, keep the moment of active doing "Titanic" to a minimum. For example, only have them perform the drill from the flags to halfway, or only to halfway. This reduces frustration while still introducing the concept.
