SIP 083: Writing Swim Practices During COVID-19

Episode 83

Episode Summary

In this episode of the Swimming Ideas Podcast, we share how we're running swim practices during COVID-19 in a small 4-lane indoor pool. From safety protocols to practice structure, here's what's working for us.

Safety Setup

  1. Fans and open doors for ventilation
  2. Maximum 7 people at a time:
  3. 2 swimmers per lane on opposite ends (4 lanes = 8 swimmers max, but we limit to 7)
  4. 1 swimmer in the ADA staircase lane
  5. 1 coach (now 2 coaches)
  6. 2 lifeguards
  7. Swimmers line up outside and are walked in with a coach chaperone
  8. Each swimmer has their own 6-foot distant spot for belongings
  9. Swimmers come in their suits and wearing masks
  10. Coaches wear masks throughout the entire practice

Practice Communication

We write practices in advance and post them on our website. During practice, we display the workout on a TV screen connected to the internet via a Fire Stick. This keeps everyone on the same page without needing to gather around a whiteboard.

Practice Philosophy

Our approach focuses on:

  1. Keeping swimmers moving
  2. Self-guided sets
  3. On rest intervals for safety
  4. Aerobic conditioning
  5. Challenging fun
  6. Socializing from a distance

Practice Format

  1. Warmup
  2. Swim and kick sets
  3. Challenges (fun, competitive elements)
  4. Cool-down and exit

Exit Protocol

Swimmers walk out a separate exit, creating a one-way flow through the facility. This reduces contact and keeps traffic moving safely. We repeat this cycle hour after hour.
