§ Breaststroke Kick

Breaststroke Kick (skill)

Definition: Sometimes called the “whip” kick because the feet accelerate like a whip by snapping the legs and squeezing the knees.

Core cues:

  1. Flex & inside foot pushing
  2. Flex toes to outside (away from each other).
  3. Circle and Squeeze feet together back to start.

Coach interpretation:

  • Flex: Primary focus for new learners.
  • Inside foot pushing: Once learners understand flex, aim attention on the inside of the feet pushing against the water as the legs extend.

Teaching strategy:

Siting on the side

Use the edge of the pool or a bench.

Learners sit with their butt on the edge so that they’re almost falling in.

Lean backwards and support body with hands.

Begin with legs extended straight.

Bend the knees and feet down.

Flex toes to outside (away from each other).

Circle and Squeeze feet together back to start.

Common errors and corrections:

  • Wiggle Hips: Correct “wiggle hips” by enforcing a straight narrow line of the spine from the chin through the toes. Focus on good long body posture to fix.

Progression:

Lift, Flex, Push

Knowing the cue is the start. The sequenced curriculum, the lesson-plan library, and the staff training that make it land in the water are in the books and the courses.
