Singing and Rolling – A Fun Swimming Game for Side Breathing

Level 2Ages 6-12Front glideSide breathing

Name

Singing and Rolling

Core Skill

Gliding independently, side breathing for front crawl

Who

Level 2 swimmers who can float and glide on their front and back with minimal support

What

A fun game that challenges swimmers to sing a song while gliding on their front and rolling their body or head to breathe. The twist? They have to keep singing loud enough for others to guess the song!

How

  1. Swimmers hold onto a floating support like a kickboard or a barbell.
  2. They move from one bench to another, or push off the wall a short distance toward the instructor.
  3. While doing a front glide with their face in the water, they sing a song.
  4. At least twice during the glide, they continue singing while turning their head to the side or rolling their body sideways, keeping their voice loud enough for others to hear.
  5. The other swimmers in the class try to figure out what song is being sung.
  6. Choose Disney movie songs, popular children’s songs, or rhymes like “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”

Difficulties Instructors Might Face

  1. Some swimmers may be shy or reluctant to sing in front of others.
  2. Some swimmers may not know the songs or have trouble remembering the lyrics.
  3. Some swimmers may find it hard to glide smoothly while singing and rolling.
  4. Some swimmers may swallow water or get water in their ears or nose while singing and rolling.

To overcome these difficulties, instructors can:

  1. Encourage swimmers to sing along with the instructor or a partner.
  2. Provide a list of songs or let swimmers choose their own songs.
  3. Demonstrate how to glide and roll properly, and give feedback to swimmers.
  4. Remind swimmers to blow bubbles and use ear plugs or nose clips if needed.
