Swimming Game – Run or Alligator Walk Race

Level 1Ages 3-6glidingkickingstreamline

Name

Run or Alligator Walk Race

Core Skill

Gliding, kicking, and understanding that streamline or gliding through the water is faster than pushing water.

Who

Two swimmers (or two teams) – one does an alligator walk, the other runs.

What

A race between two different movement styles: alligator walk in shallow water vs. running in deeper water.

How

  1. Choose a start position and a finish location.
  2. One swimmer performs an alligator walk in shallow water (hands on bottom, body horizontal, kicking).
  3. The other swimmer runs in deeper water (ideally up to chest depth).
  4. Race from start to finish. See who wins.

Bonus: If the alligator walker puts their face in the water, it’s a super bonus – they get extra gliding practice!

Difficulties Instructors Might Face

Swimmers may try to cheat by standing up during the alligator walk or running too fast in shallow water. Emphasize that the alligator walker must keep their body horizontal and kick. Also, ensure the deeper water runner is safe and comfortable at chest depth.
