Who
Any level or ability. Swimmers just need to be able to see each other and stay safe in the water.
What
The Mirror Game is a fun and easy game that helps swimmers practice coordination, balance, and imitation skills. It also encourages creativity and social interaction. The game can be adapted for different swimming abilities, as long as swimmers can see each other and stay safe.
How
To play, you need at least two swimmers (more can join if you like). One swimmer is theleader, and the other is themirror.
- The leader stands or floats in front of the mirror and performs different movements in the water – waving arms, kicking legs, spinning around, or any other creative action.
- The mirror must copy the leader’s movements exactly, as if looking into a real mirror.
- Play for a few minutes or until the leader runs out of ideas, then switch roles or choose a new leader and mirror.
To increase the challenge:
- Speed up or slow down the movements.
- Add more players (one leader, multiple mirrors).
- Use different parts of the body (head, shoulders, hands, feet).
Difficulties Instructors Might Face
Younger or less confident swimmers may struggle to watch and copy at the same time. Start with slow, simple movements and demonstrate clearly. If swimmers get confused, pair them with a more experienced partner or have the leader call out the movement before doing it. Also, ensure the water is shallow enough for all participants to stand comfortably and see each other.
