Swimming Game - Glide or Die: A Breaststroke Glide Challenge

Level 3Ages 6-12breaststroke glidestreamlinetimingcoordination

Name

Glide or Die

Core Skill

Breaststroke glide — the ability to extend arms and legs in a streamlined position after each stroke cycle, maintaining momentum and reducing drag.

Who

This game is for swimmers who have already learned the basic movements of the breaststroke arms and kick but need to work on their glide and timing. It can be adapted for different ability levels by changing the distance, speed, or number of repetitions.

What

The objective is to glide as far as possible after each stroke cycle without taking another stroke or breaking the streamline. The swimmer who glides the farthest wins.

You need at least two swimmers and a lane or section of the pool marked with cones or flags. A stopwatch or whistle helps signal start and stop.

How

  1. Swimmers line up at one end of the lane or section.
  2. On your signal, they start swimming breaststroke toward the other end.
  3. After each stroke cycle, they must extend their arms and legs in a streamlined position and glide as far as they can without taking another stroke or breaking their streamline.
  4. They can only resume swimming when their speed drops significantly or when they sink or stop moving.
  5. Swimmers repeat this process until they reach the other end.
  6. The swimmer who glides the farthest after each stroke cycle wins that round. Play multiple rounds and keep score to make it more competitive.
