Swimming Game: Driving the Stake (Body Position Challenge)

Level 2Ages 6-12Body PositionStreamliningCore Strength

Name

Driving the Stake

Core Skill

Body Position, Core Strength, and Streamlining. This game forces swimmers to maintain a strong, rigid body line, which is crucial for speed in all strokes (freestyle, backstroke, glide).

Who

Swimmers are paired up. This works best for groups of four or more, allowing multiple pairs to participate simultaneously.

What

The pair must push the streamlined swimmer down to the bottom of the pool as fast as possible while keeping the body perfectly straight. The objective is speed combined with flawless form.

How to Play

  1. One swimmer assumes the most streamlined body position possible (hands at sides/hips, feet together, head in line with the spine).
  2. The partner pushes the streamlined swimmer by the shoulders straight down.
  3. Each pair should perform the pushing down 3 times to their partner, and then switch roles (the pusher becomes the streamlined swimmer).

For added challenge and fun, place rings or toys at the bottom for the swimmers to "aim" at.

Difficulties Instructors Might Face

Swimmers may try to compensate for lack of core strength by kicking excessively, which breaks the perfect line. Remind them that the goal is a rigid, long body, not just powerful kicks.
