Core Skill
Breath control, body position, and relaxation on the back.
Who
Swimmers who can already float on their back with assistance and are ready to challenge their balance and breath control.
What
This challenge tests a swimmer's ability to maintain a stable star float on their back without any propulsive movements. It emphasizes using breath and body alignment to stay afloat.
How
Start by lying on your back with arms and legs spread wide in a star shape. Take a deep breath and hold it, keeping your lungs full to help with buoyancy. Relax your body and focus on keeping your head back, hips up, and core engaged. Do not kick or move your hands. Breathe slowly and steadily if needed, but avoid sudden movements. Hold the position for 30 seconds.
Difficulties Instructors Might Face
Swimmers may instinctively kick or move their hands to correct their balance. Encourage them to focus on breath control and relaxing into the water. If they sink, remind them to keep their head back and look at the ceiling or sky. Some swimmers may need a gentle reminder to keep their hips up.
