Name
Alligator Walks are a great activity for novice and little swimmers! This swimming lessons game is excellent and perfect for children under 6 years old.
Core Skill
This activity helps build foundational skills like front glide, breath control, and upper body strength while simulating a natural swimming movement.
Who
Novice and little swimmers, especially those under 6 years old.
What
The goal is for the swimmer to simulate an alligator's walk through the water by using their arms for support while kicking their legs, mimicking a front glide/float.
How
This activity works best in a zero-depth pool (a beach-like simulated pool).
- Lay on your belly and use your arms to hold your head above the water. Start in the shallowest part of the pool.
- Stretch your legs out behind you.
- "Walk" using your arms and kick your feet. The goal is to simulate front glides/floats while using your arms for support.
- Encourage kids to blow bubbles or look down as they walk.
- If the child is bold, walk towards deeper water so their arms are just long enough to keep their mouth above the water.
Difficulties Instructors Might Face
Instructors should remember that this game can be combined with other location-based activities, such as a Treasure Hunt. When teaching, it's helpful to guide the group by having them perform Alligator Walks to a specific location and then returning to the starting point. Always prioritize safety in the shallowest area first.
