Name
6 Jumps from the Blocks (also called Jumping off the Blocks)
Core Skill
This game helps swimmers practice jumping or diving from the blocks, underwater swimming, and quick wall exits.
Who
This game is for developmental swim team swimmers or Level 4 swimmers who have some experience jumping or diving from the blocks and can swim at least 25 yards.
What
Swimmers take turns jumping or diving off the blocks in six different ways. Each jump has a specific goal — small splash, high jump, far jump, or goofy. After each jump, swimmers swim past the flags, move to the wall, exit the pool, and walk back to their lane. Points are awarded for each jump. The game can be played individually or in teams.
How
You need a pool with blocks, flags, and a wall. A coach or timer keeps track of time and points.
- Swimmers line up behind one block.
- The coach starts a stopwatch and announces the start.
- Swimmers take turns jumping or diving off the blocks, one at a time. After each jump, they swim past the flags, move to the wall, exit, and walk around the flag poles and coach to return to their lane.
- The coach assigns points for each jump:
- The game ends after 10 minutes or when all swimmers have completed six jumps, whichever comes first.
- The coach adds up points and announces the winner.
Difficulties Instructors Might Face
- Ensuring safety and supervision, especially during jumps and dives.
- Providing clear instructions and feedback for each jump, and enforcing rules.
- Keeping track of time and points for each swimmer or team.
- Motivating swimmers to try different jumps and have fun.
