Name
Flatten Yourself Like a Squished Bug
One-Liner
Flatten yourself against the + mark like a squished bug.
Success Criteria
You are completely flat against the + mark, with your body spread out like a bug that's been squished by a giant hand. Your arms and legs are extended, and you hold the position for at least 3 seconds.
Failure Criteria
You curl up, lift any part of your body off the + mark, or cannot hold the position for 3 seconds.
Core Skill
Body position, buoyancy control, and water comfort. This challenge teaches swimmers to relax and spread out on the water's surface, which is essential for floating and streamlining.
Who
Swimmers of all levels who are comfortable putting their face in the water and floating on their front or back. Great for kids who need a playful way to practice body awareness.
What
A simple but fun challenge: the swimmer lies flat on the water's surface, centered on a + mark (or any designated spot), and spreads their arms and legs out like a squished bug. The instructor can say, "You're a bug that's been squished by a giant hand!" to set the scene.
How
- Mark a + on the pool deck or use a visual reference on the bottom of the pool.
- Have the swimmer lie face-down or face-up on the water, centered on the +.
- Encourage them to spread their arms and legs wide, like a bug that's been squished.
- Hold the position for 3–5 seconds.
Difficulties Instructors Might Face
Some swimmers may curl up or lift their head, which prevents them from flattening out. Encourage them to relax their neck and look straight down (or up if on their back). For the underwater bonus, ensure the swimmer can comfortably hold their breath and is supervised closely. If the pool bottom is too deep, use a floating mat or shallow water area.
