Core Skill

Body position and balance in the water.

Who

What

Float on your side, like you're laying down on your side reading a book, exactly in the middle of the water from the surface and from the bottom. Like Goldielocks, not too deep, not too shallow. Perfectly in the middle.

How

  1. Start by floating on your back or stomach to get comfortable.
  2. Gently roll onto your side, keeping your body straight and relaxed.
  3. Adjust your position so you are suspended in the middle of the water column, not touching the bottom or breaking the surface.
  4. Hold this position for as long as you can, breathing calmly.

Difficulties Instructors Might Face

Swimmers may struggle to find the middle of the water column or may have difficulty maintaining the side-float position. Encourage them to use small adjustments with their arms and legs to find balance. Remind them to relax and breathe steadily.
