Name
Pay the Hot Dog Vendor
Core Skill
Imaginative play, breath control, and water comfort.
Who
Swimmers of all levels who enjoy creative games. Best for young children or beginner swimmers who need a fun, low-pressure activity.
What
Swimmers must eat 3 hot dogs with at least 2 toppings of their choice. They can add more toppings. No ketchup! Chicago style only. Must have: dog, bun, every time.
How
Set up an imaginary hot dog stand at the pool edge or in the water. Each swimmer takes a turn ordering a hot dog from the vendor (instructor or another swimmer). The swimmer must pretend to eat the hot dog by taking bites (exaggerated chewing motions) while staying afloat or treading water. After finishing, they can add toppings like mustard, relish, onions, or pickles by mimicking the actions. The game continues until each swimmer has eaten 3 hot dogs with at least 2 toppings.
Difficulties Instructors Might Face
Young swimmers may get too excited and forget to stay safe in the water. Keep the game structured with clear turns. Some children might not understand the imaginary play—demonstrate first with enthusiasm. Ensure the water is warm enough for extended play.
