Guard Tube Raft

One-Liner

Swimmers sit on a lifeguard tube and try to balance for 10 seconds without falling off or holding onto anything.

Success Criteria

The swimmers stay upright on the tube for 10 seconds without toppling over or holding onto the wall, lane line, or bench.

Failure Criteria

The swimmers fall off the tube, lose balance, or hold onto the wall, lane line, or bench before the 10 seconds are up.

Core Skill

This challenge aims to improve the swimmers’balance,core strength,teamwork, andfun.

Who

This challenge is suitable for swimmers ofany levelwho cansiton a lifeguard tube. It can be done withtwo or three swimmersper tube.

What

The swimmers are given a lifeguard tube and have tosit on itlike they’re riding a horse (one leg on each long side of the tube). They have tostay uprightfor10 secondswithouttoppling overorholding ontothe wall, a lane line, or a bench.

How

  1. The instructor provides each group of swimmers with a lifeguard tube and assigns them aspotin the pool.
  2. The instructor explains the rules and the objective of the challenge to the swimmers.
  3. The instructor starts the challenge and keeps track of thetimeand theperformanceof the swimmers.
  4. The swimmers try tosit on the tubeas instructed andbalancethemselves for 10 seconds.
  5. The instructor givesfeedbackandencouragementto the swimmers and awards thempointsbased on their performance.
  6. The instructor can also offerbonus pointsfor the following:
  7. If the swimmers can all get on the tubewithout using their handstouching the tube, orwithout using their armsto touch the tube.
  8. If all swimmers can sit on the tubeside saddle, or with both legs on one side of the tube.

Difficulties Instructors Might Face

Some possible difficulties that instructors might face while conducting this challenge are:

  1. The swimmers might have troublegetting onorstaying onthe tube, and might fall off or lose balance.
  2. The swimmers might have difficultycooperatingwith their teammates, especially if they have different levels of skill or confidence.
  3. The swimmers might getfrustratedordiscouragedby the challenge, and might need more support or motivation.
