Parent-tot time doesn't have to be just about splashing! Incorporating simple skills like throwing and gliding into play is the perfect way to build confidence and comfort in the water. This activity uses a fun toy as a motivator while gently progressing key water safety and movement skills.
Getting Started: Setting the Scene
Before you begin, remember that safety and fun are the top priorities. Keep an eye on your tot at all times, and always start in shallow, comfortable water.
Preparation & Setup
- Initial Position: Have your child sitting safely on the edge of the pool. The parent should be positioned in the water nearby, holding the child's hand for support.
- Materials: Gather a few fun, floating toys that are easy for little hands to grab.
The Activity Progression
Follow these steps, moving slowly and allowing your tot time to master each stage before advancing.
Step 1: Encouraging the Throw
Stand next to your child so they have a clear view of the pool. Give them a toy and encourage them to throw it into the water. This builds hand-eye coordination and comfort with launching objects!
Step 2: Water Acclimation & Scooping
Once comfortable, guide your child to the toy. Have them pick it up, and then practice a <strong>FRONT GLIDE</strong> toward the toy. The glide helps them learn about body position and propulsion through the water. (<em>Coach Tip: Keep your body straight like a torpedo!</em>)
Step 3: Front Glide Practice
After retrieving the toy, guide them back to the wall while practicing a <strong>BACK GLIDE</strong>. This variation helps them understand how to maintain horizontal body position even when looking up at the surface. This completes the cycle of movement and retrieval.
Step 4: Back Glide & Retrieval
Safety Reminders for Parents
Remember, this is play! If your child gets frustrated or tired, take a break. Always supervise closely, and never let them swim alone. The goal is positive association with the water, not perfect technique!
