Lesson Plans

This guide outlines a fun and developmentally appropriate Day 1 lesson plan designed for parents and infants. Remember that the primary goal on Day 1 is building comfort, trust, and positive associations with the water!

๐ŸŠ Round 1: Water Acclimation and Play

This first round focuses heavily on comfort, play, and basic water confidence. Keep the energy light and positive!

Warm-Up & Play Activities

  • Sit the child on the side, allowing them to splash their feet or interact with floating toys.Utilize floating smiley faces to encourage gentle movement and exploration.

Basic Skill Introduction

These activities introduce controlled movements in a safe, supported manner:

  • Foot Kicks (Supported): Practice pressing the floating smile underwater with one foot, then repeating with the other foot.Double Kick: Progress to pressing the smile underwater with both feet simultaneously.

Water Play & Songs

Incorporating songs helps transition from structured activity to free play. Sing 'Ring around the Rosie,' and at the end, use a fun cue like, "...all jump in!"

Jump In: Get ready for the big splash! See picture for jumping in technique:

๐ŸŽถ Parent Tot Activity: The Wheels on the Bus

This classic song is perfect for bonding and movement in the water.

๐ŸŠ Round 2: Skill Progression and Support

Once the baby is comfortable with play, you can introduce more structured skill work. Always prioritize safety and comfort over perfection.

Supported Floats Review

  • Review Supported Front Float and Back Float techniques.Tip: Show pictures and review progression to ensure proper alignment and support for the parent and baby.

โš ๏ธ Coaching Tip: When supporting floats, remember that your body position is key. If you are fatigued or stressed, the baby will notice and struggle to relax. Take deep breaths and keep positive communication going!

Have the swimmer rest on the parent's shoulder. Lean into their neck and arm.

Progression Tip: If you are advanced, try supporting the back of the head for better alignment.

Start with the head on the shoulder, gradually supporting the head and body, and finally focusing only on head support. Remember, your calm will dictate the swimmer's calm!
